In this “Stories from the Salish Sea” series, Chris Morgan: wildlife ecologist, conservationist, filmmaker and host of the podcast THE WILD, takes us under the Salish Sea to discover the incredible interconnected ecosystems, called kelp highways, that make life in the Pacific Northwest possible. Chris listens to Native American biologists and the Coast Salish people who have lived alongside the kelp and protected it for thousands of years. Tribes have joined together to protect the kelp highway and are actively training their youth to be the next natural resource managers of this life-giving ecosystem that creates the food for our food and is critical for the survival of species like pinto abalone, salmon and more.

Episode 1: The Kelp Highway

Chris Morgan takes us under the Salish Sea to discover the incredible interconnected ecosystems, called kelp highways, that make life in the Pacific Northwest possible.

Episode 2: Salmon in the City

Chris Morgan paddles his kayak through urban streams and lakes and to the Ballard Locks to find out more about how the salmon survive the city—and our role in protecting them. A Native American biologist and Seattle Aquarium staff show Chris how our actions play a huge role in salmon’s success and how we’re all connected through water, because “water is life.”

Episode 3: Eba and the Orcas

Chris Morgan takes us on a research vessel in the San Juan Islands to witness Eba, an orca-scat-sniffing dog. The scat tells the story of the challenges the orcas are facing—from toxicity and stress levels to reproductive health and more. Chris uncovers some brilliant work that has already been done to help orcas and what you can do to help.
